Glasshive Kiln Instructions

Setting up your Kiln

Location

First thing to consider is where to place your kiln. Things to consider:

  • The kiln will get very hot so place at least 20cm away from anything including the wall. The feet will reduce the heat transfer to surface you place it on, but it is recommended you put on a fire retardant surface such as tiles, metal or fibre cement sheet.
  • No flammable items should be stored close to your kiln
  • You can use an extension cord up to 7.5m in length. It is not recommended to go above this length as it will impact the operation of the kiln.
  • Kilns should be on their own electrical circuit. If unsure consult an electrician.

Unboxing

Once you open your box, carefully pull the kiln out.

Always check the interior to ensure the elements haven’t become loose and all the bricks are in place.

Put on the handles.

The fibre blanket is to be placed on the floor of the kiln. It is used to block the gap on the floor of the kiln for when you want to fuse glass. The blanket will break down over time and it’s recommended its replaced annually.

Turn it on

When you turn on the kiln it will go to and stay on 925 degrees F until you turn it off or run a program. This is called the Set Point Temperature. This can be changed to a different temperature if required – see Changing the Set Point Temperature.

Your kiln has 2 programs already saved. These can be changed at any time. If when following the instructions below you make a mistake, it’s recommended you turn the kiln off and on and start again.

On your display you will have the following items
